Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are infectious diseases that affect the respiratory tract. These infections are generally classified into two main categories:
- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URI or URTI): These involve the nose, sinuses, pharynx, or larynx.
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections (LRI or LRTI): These involve the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and lungs.
Testing for RTIs involves collecting samples from the nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal, or sputum regions using a VTM kit with transport media and a swab. This helps identify the presence of pathogens responsible for the infection.
